About Me

I’m an experienced academic writing tutor, who emphasises simple and effective advice given in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, a world-class institution, graduating with a strong grounding in writing about the arts and humanities, due to my focus on film, music, and cultural history.

During my PhD studies, I worked as a tutor on the Introduction to European Cinema undergraduate course , where I not only taught students about structuring an essay correctly, but also marked student essays. This experience means that I am well-placed to advise students from many different academic backgrounds on how to make sure that they produce a strong, well-written academic essay.

During the last two years, I’ve built on this experience by working as an academic writing tutor for Upswing, a platform which provides students from non-traditional and historically marginalized backgrounds in the U.S.A with educational support. This work has aligned strongly with my own belief that academia should be more accessible, and that the process of writing a piece of academia work should be de-mystified for students from all backgrounds. By teaching you useful tools and tips, I aim to show that anyone can improve their essay writing skills, when provided with enough support and guidance.

From 2019-2021, I also worked as a copy editor for the peer-reviewed academic journal Film-Philosophy, focussing on improving the readability, grammar, and accuracy of articles submitted to the journal. This opportunity to develop my own critical thinking and editing skills was invaluable, as work was submitted to the journal not just by students, but also by established academics.

Aside from my work with academic writing students, I also work as a tutor of English as a Second Language, which means that I am very open to working with students from international backgrounds, who lack confidence in their use of English in an academic setting. In previous years, I’ve also worked as a private tutor of flute, recorder, and piano. As you can probably tell, teaching is something that I find very rewarding!

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, spending time outdoors, watching films, listening to music, and spending time with family.
